FYI - Jill just got off the phone with the Interpretive Supervisor for the National Park Service at Glacier Bay.

We (and many others) were shocked by the delivery and remedial level of the script we all endured for hours over the PA system on board the Star while in Glacier Bay. (ie. you will see on your map there are three colors. (Long pause). Green is for the land. (Long pause). White is for the Glacier. (Long pause). Blue is for the water. (Long pause) We will stay in the blue area today. (Long pause) Because we are on a ship! (Longer pause).:o

As a 25 year Alaskan, Jill was embarrassed by the presentation given by the National Park Ranger. Maybe the young woman had never read the script before; maybe this was her first presentation over a PA system! It sure did make for hours of comedy, and we're still getting laughs out of it. But, the manner in which it was delivered, and the level of language and information exchanged was fit for grade 1 or 2 students at best.

So, tomorrow is the "staff" meeting and there will be a workshop for all Rangers on the presentation of material on board the cruise ships. Hopefully, this will prevent future cruisers from enduring the same torture we experienced. On the flip side, of course, they won't experience a Glacier Bay NPS comedy show over the PA system.

Cheers!

Thank you for talking to them- Hopefully this will be better in the future thanks to you guys!

I cracked up everytime I heard her speak. We all did get a good laugh out of it. Sometimes it is best to let a glacier speak for itself. I thought I heard the glacier yelling for her to shut up...lol.

And here I thought it was just the little voices inside my head.....

The night before the Park Ranger presentation was the only night that I went out and had a couple to many glasses of wine, so when I woke up the next morning with a slight headache to DING DONG... blah blah blah, (Long Pause)...blah blah. Then it would stop, then here it come DING DONG...blah blah blah (Long Pause) blah blah blah

All I could think was "ABANDON SHIP"!! It was doubly torturous for me that morning... what a price to pay for having such a good time the night before...

It really made for some good humour with Rosie and Elvira!

On the other hand Im glad to hear they are going to work with the rangers on their presentation skills.

Thanks for doing that! We have friends leaving for Alaska on Friday, and we warned them to wear earplugs to avoid torture by ranger. My favorite was the Walt Whitman quote...At that point three seagulls DID abandon ship!

Wavejourney,

You captured it so well... It was really funny (long pause) and annoying (long pause) at the same time (longer pause), Oh, for a ranger who actually learned how to speak in public.

Bing ... Bong.. Oh my god! Have you all forgotten the most comical of the poor ranger's comments? Bing ... Bong.. "Sometimes Rangers have been accused of talking to much" (huge laughter) "So, I'll be quiet so that we can enjoy the pristine beauty of Glacier Bay" (huge applause) :D Actually, I found the on-deck rangers quite interesting and helpful. Plus, I have been surprisingly impressed by the amount of information, presented by the Public Adress System Ranger, retained by my children - remedial works!:p
