All,

I feel like I live in this happy little bubble and that bad things just don't happen anymore. Gone are the days fearing the Matthew Sheppard events...........well last night my bubble burst. My son and his partner live in Atlanta. They went out to do some christmas shopping and were leaving Target. They reached their car and another car was parked next to theirs. They put their things in their car, and then started walking towards the grocery store (to buy stamps of all things for their chirstmas cards). The other car pulled out of its parking spot, stopped in front of my kids, yelled profanities and negative comments about them being gay and one of the passengers pulled out a gun and shot at my son and his partner. Luckily, it was only a BB gun, but my son was hit in the face with one of the pellets. He's fine, the doctors indicated that they couldn't remove the pellett because it would cause more damage. Since I live in Colorado, I couldn't rush over to be by his side but he tells me not to worry........NOT TO WORRY?????? .

So why am I writing this? We all know it happens.......but not to my family. I'm angry because my son now will have to deal with the emotional issues that go with being violated and injured by an act of evil hatred that should not be happening. I'm angry that while we've come so far, my children will have to continue fighting for equal rights and have to deal with the prejudices that continue. I'm writing because the only people who can really understand my anger and frustration are people who have been on a R family cruise and really know what is like to take your guard down and enjoy the one week a year without fear.

Thank you for letting me do that.

Lisa

Oh Lisa, I am so very sorry this happened to your son, your family. I can't imagine what you as a parent have gone through in this. Thanks for sharing, less we become complacent. I hope for as full of a recovery as possible for them both, TJ and family

Reading your son's story makes me physically ill. We live in FL, but we have not seen that extreme behavior in our neighborhood. I'm so sorry this happened and hope he will have a speedy recovery. We can all learn something from your son's positive attitude. Wishing better days for you and your family

Lisa,
I am so sorry that you and your family had to go through such a violent act of ignorance and violence.I will keep you and your family in my prayers.I will not say don't worry. As a Mother I worry every time my child walks out the door.I would say follow up with the Local Police Department and make sure that they are treating this just as serious as it is a CRIME of PREJUDICE A HATE CRIME.The people that committed this vile act should be prosacuted to the fullest extent that the Law allows. If the local Law enforcement isn't treating it as such than I would take it to the State or Federal level if I had to.
Pm me if you want to talk to someone Lisa.I will give you my number. I have a great big ear and a bigger mouth.

Lisa,

It makes me so angry to read that story, I am so sorry that your kids had to go through that. All of my love and hugs to your family. May you find peace again soon.
As a community we cannot stand for this type of treatment any longer.

Lisa:

I too, am so sorry for this awful senseless violence. This is a Prime example of us 'sticking together' instead of all the stupid infighting amongst us...We can absolutely be political and have our voices be heard...We are not going to take it anymore!!

I hope your son has access to counselling and his face and heart heals...sending him(and you) lots of Love, Light, and Healing Energy!
