Great tips! This will be our family's 3rd cruise next summer with R Family. We had never been on a non-R-Family cruise and after two summers on R Family cruises, we will never go on a straight cruise. Not that my family has anything against cool straight folks, but it sure is nice being on the ship with quite a mix of people with one main thing in common---tolerance.
Cheryl and others were a big help to us on these boards and answered many of our questions as first timers. A lot of these suggestions already posted by Cheryl was info we received before we went on our first cruise in 2007.
Heck, as they say, you never forget your FIRST!
The one tip I would add to Cheryl's tips, especially for those of us who are a bit directionally impaired, is to study the multiple deck layout before you get on board. Get a sense immediately of what is the bow (front) of the boat vs. the stern, port and starboard sides---plus, perhaps even more important, "Aft" and "Forward". This will save you a lot of unnecessary trips looking for meeting places, etc.
Thanks to Cheryl and all of you who have given little tips...they have made a big difference in things going smoothly.
One more tip I just remembered........if you think you might want to do laundry on board yourself, bring a ziplock with your own powdered soap. I watched a lot of folk loose their money in the laundry powder machine on board.
Does anyone know if the Star has laundry as the Dawn did?

Sadly, there is no self-service laundry on the Star. You can get laundry and dry cleaning done by NCL for a fee.
My tip would be to eat breakfast in one of the two main dining rooms (or Cagney's if you get suite perks) when you can instead of the Market Cafe, especially on port days. The buffet gets a bit crazy and packed when everyone's trying to get off the ship at the same time. Sadly, NCL doesn't serve hot breakfast for room service unless you are in a suite.
The two main dining rooms, Aqua and Versailles, serve the same menu in different atmospheres. Versailles is big and gilded, Aqua is more intimate with modern decor. These are the only two sit-down, full-service restaurants that don't have a cover charge (Market Cafe, Topsiders, etc which are not full-service are also no extra charge).
If you want to eat at Teppanyaki (like Benihana- asian grill cooked with flair right at your table), you'll probably want to make reservations in advance as they only seat about a dozen people at each sitting. We didnt find it hard to make a reservation for any of the other restaurants with a cover, but we did make our reservations a couple days in advance (how far in advance you can make them depends on what kind of room category you are in.
Why do all my tips have to do with eating? :)

Hi I am Ashes and this will be our families 3'rd cruise. Crazy Cheryl often talks about my "football" team-just cause I have 7 boys! Just wait this year we are up to 15 people and 6 cabins!!!! We have lost our minds but love rfamily family. Even grandma, who just turned 90 is coming with us!
So a few tips I can add-there are two wonderful interpreters on board for all the shows and activities to be interpreted in American Sign Language. As we have 3 deaf people on board in our group this year, there may be more. The kids club has worked with all of my kids very well-and they all have mild to moderate special needs. They love the clubs and I have learn a lot about "letting go" and having others take good care of the troops.
I have not had anyone in a wheelchair travel with us, but I have noticed a few issues although the cruise line seems to try. the biggest issue seems to be ramps at ports of call for scooters-I have seen them carried! Someone with first hand experience can perhaps add to this.
If you are not sure to join us-do not hesitate-it will be one of your best memories and if you have kids they won't stop talking about the boat and people for months. Hope to see many new people as well as old friends.
I had a different experience with the soda cards, so I will try to get more info. We had a pre cruise dinner get together for the last two cruises- the one I went to was great for meeting people. We will hopefully be setting up one for this cruise-details as we get closer.

Hi guys. We were on the New England cruise this summer - our first. Cheryl's and other's advice on this forum were extremely helpful to us getting ready for the cruise.
About the laundry detergent... I posted this right before we left but just a reminder that it does look like a bag of cocaine! So if you are flying, you might want to put it something that isn't clear like a ziplock bag. The laundry can get crowded so we went early in the morning. Have to say I met some of the nicest people in the laundry room.
I don't think we are going to Alaska just because we have been before and the economy has hit us pretty hard. But it is a great place to visit. Just beautiful.
I have to tell you guys that I didn't think the food was very good on the last cruise. That is the only complaint I have about the cruise. Everything else was magical. The best time of our lives. It was almost like the no cover places weren't very good so as to get you to go to the cover charge places - and I am not a picky eater. What do you think?

Hello Everyone,
I have been looking through all the posts for quite awhile today while my kids watch high school muscial and have a few questons before I book our first R Family Cruise. (We have never been on a cruise before so please excuse me if my questions don't make sense.)
1. We are a family of 4, two moms & two daughters (7&13, when we cruise) any suggestions of a type of room we should book?
2. Also wondering what level we should stay on? I read a couple posts where people were under the casinos, we would like to avoid being under the casino, even though I will probably frequent the casino alot.
3. How far in advance do most people generally fly in?
That's all I can think of right now. After looking at several places to vacation we have decided to vacation with R Family Cruises. Looking forward to meeting everyone.

Hi Melissa, Welcome to you and yours. As to room, what you can afford dictates. Inside is the least expensive and if you can manage it I would suggest a balcony. Low and in the middle of the ship is the least rocky but is also apt to be far away from the main buffet and could end up under casino, or worse. It is a hit or miss on where you are, as to what you may be by. Could be under a piano bar, under a pool deck, over a kids spot and so on. It can seem much like a motel with people up and down the corridors. It also can seem like you are back in your early childhood and being rocked to sleep. It all depends on what you are used to.. My family has not had trouble sleeping on any deck and there are 8 who travel together. I am not sure how much the casino will be open since we won't be in international waters all that much, but maybe others can speak to that. You will have the time of your lives, all of you, and hope to see you on the boat. TJ

Looking forward to meeting everyone.

Why don't we just make this an ongoing list of suggestions. It will end up a very long list by the time the Cruise gets here.As people think of more tips they can use the edit feature to add to it.....
It will be an online How to Cruise R Family FreeStyle!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
How about about a few FAQS for R first Timer Cruisers or folks that are wondering what an R Family vacation is.
I am known on the Boards as Crazy Cheryl.
You will see that I have a lot of posts.
I have been on all of the Cruises becuase I love what they stand for.
They have brought so much joy, friends, family and as Ro says YELLOW into my life.
That I really believe that everyone should have the chance to experiance the magic the feeling of beloning the Love.It is the people that go that make it so great.
You will find on these boards a lot of people that are willing to answer questions to make your experiance easier .It is an experiance not a trip one you will treasure.
I have made and met so many friends through R Family.
I have put together a little FAQ list to answer some general questions.
Pack a bag to carry on the ship with you.
They will deliver your luggage sometimes it takes up to 4 hours to arrive in your stateroom.
Bathing suit,tannng lotion,formula ,basic neccessities,meds,docs,and all valuables.
You are given cards that act as room keys these are also your credit card on the Boat to purchase drinks, excursions, and use in the Casino.(that is my stateroom)
The last night you will get a bill. You will be required to leave a credit Card when you get on or a cash deposit. They will automatically charge it to your room when we get back.
If you have teens or kids you can limit their access to charge.
Folks like to show their pride so they decorate their doors.
They laso have mini bars in the room
If you dont drink or have teens ask the Stewart to remove the items.
The Doors are made out of metal so magnets and pictures are a good way to decorate.
Walkie Talkies don't really work to well on the Boat.
If you are going to be splitting up (especilly if you have teens) a dry Erase Board works well to make catching up to each other easy.
The phone system can be used also as a message holder for eachother.
They have a teen Club.
Teen Club usually has sign up on the first night at 7.
The Kids will bring you a paper to sign or you can go yourself and sign them up.
It is good that they make it the first night.
You will get a Daily schedule on your bed every night with the next days events
(Bring a Hightlighter with you to plan the next days activities.
They have theme events where people get dressed if they choose.
It is not mandatory.
The beauty about an R family vacation is nothing is mandatory.
You eat when you want dress how you want it is Free Style for real no rules
Gregg and Kelli will be in your room Via the TV nightly with the next days schedule Shows,Port Times,Theme parties, etc.
Check for the Mixers.A mixer is were they give people an opportunity to meet with similiar interests or backgrounds.Like singles, knitters, fosterparents, forum.(They will also take requests if there is a group that wants to meet.
If you play BINGO get the electronic machines they win most of the time as opposed to the Paper.
A must go to Workshop is the Teen Panel.
(You will leave their with hope for the world after listening to the children our community are raising.)
They leave you little gifts nightly assorted variety.
There is a Lobster Night where they serve Lobster in every restuarant ask when you get on at the conceierge. That is also where you can make dinner reservations for the restuarants that require them.It is on the 7 th floor by the reception desk.
You can order as much as you like.Don't miss it I did one year
The Buffet on the 12 floor adjacent to the POOL has a Kids area where they
have a kids menu that is open most of the time.
The main dining room is the Venetian it has a seperate entrance on 6 or 7
you do not need reservations.
Some of the NO COVER restuarants like Mexican require a reservation.
Cagney's is the Steak House which is small so if you want to eat there make sure that you make reservations. It is a cover. The Steaks are great
They have Sushi actually the Japanese food is excellant and worth the Cover charge.
They sell soda stickers it goes on your card that allows you unlimited soda and Juice.
Bottled water you Pay for.(read between the lines here if are going to be together a lot.
Buy one sticker they are not going to follow you around and see who is drinking the Soda.)
You just flash the card at them and they bring you the beverage.
Or you can but a booklet of Non Alcoholic frozen drinks for the Kids.
They have an Internet Cafe.you can buy a package of minutes from them and use our laptop or use their computers.
Here is where locking down the teens card is a good idea. That was a few hundred dollar lesson
If you use your phone while on the ship NCL will tack on a 3.99 a minute surcharge no matter who you carrier is you will see it on your next bell ouchhhhhh.
Confiscate all batteries from anything that can communicte.
Bring a Power Strip to charge Cell ,Camera, etc for when you are in Port.
The Blow Dryers are weak if you are a High power Hair person bring your own.
Do not miss the Choclate Buffet.
If you Gamble you can draw from the cage against your Room key card.
Bring cash the ATM charges more than the John the Shylock on the corner.
Do not MISS THE POOLSIDE KICKOFF PARTY 4 Deck 12.
Bring a couple of extra Memory cards for your Camera cause you are for the Vacation like none you have ever had.
Think layers when packing. The inside venues are aircondioned so make sure and bring a sweater or a few long sleeves.
The Main shows are in the Stardust theatre. One early around 7 or 7:30 and one around 9:30 or 10.
They also streamline the main shows into your room on the TV which is great in case it is naptime!!!!
The opening show is electric RO opens it do not miss it!!!!!!!.
They have a Nanny service which you have to go and sign up for in the morning for the wee ones that are not old enough to go to kids Crew yet.
They are great with the kids. There are limited spots.
YOU ARE GOING ON THE REAL GAY LOVE BOAT.
The best advice that I can give everybody is if you can get on this Boat do it you will leave feeling like there is hope for our community. You will meet people that will become friends and family Be yourself you will be surrounded by people just like you.
Most of all it will be great for your kids to see so many families so different yet so alike.
Can't wait to see my old R FAMILY(IES) and meet my new.
See ya on the BOAT.
Love,
Character Crazy Cheryl.

Hi Everyone!
Yes, I suffer from that "I made my decision now I need to understand everything...NOW!" syndrome. I'm trying to be a little patient, but I'm really excited about this trip!
I was wondering if someone could give me an idea of what to expect will happen between now and cruise time. Where I'm at is that I've called and talked to Colin and booked the room. What happens next and until the cruise? For example:
What information comes to me and when?
When do people select shore excursions...what do I need to know before I do try to book shore excursions?
How much before cruise departure on the 11th do we need to be at the pier (or wherever we have to go)?
How long after arrival will it take to disembark and be ready to go?
How do people find each other on the ship?Answers to any of these would be great!
Thanks,
Kevin

Hi Kevin!
Totally get where you are coming from....this is Peg and my 2nd cruise. It is even more exciting if that is possible
You will receive your boarding pass and a reservation form that needs faxed or mailed back to rfamily. I think it was apprx a month or so before we sail when we received the weeks itinerary.
I think we can board @ 11am and we leave @ 4pm
For us it was the pre-dinner cruise that we got to meet people and we connected on the cruise. Somehow we missed the blog mixer(not this year!) You can call each other and make plans to meet(each cabin has a phone).
We have planned on doing more on the ship then excursions...due to the dreadfully low Canadian $. With that, we did not book our excursions through NCL last year, but did so directly..much cheaper. I understand that if you are late the ship will leave without you...if you choose to book directly it may be helpful to find out when the folks booked through NCL are going. That way you can be sure the ship will wait. Under cruises and events you can find out most of the excursions
It may be helpful to go through past cruise threads...I also copied, pasted, and printed all of Cheryl's suggestions and brought them with us last cruise!
Okay...I'm just ending my night shift so forgive the rambling!

More of the same. I drove R Family crazy on my first booking, which was the week of, and I had never cruised, I was taking much of my family five of the kids one grand daughter my ex and so on so it was a frantic week. Did I mention I was TERRIFIED of boats, water, storms etc.... and still jumped in and have not regretted it. Ask away and we will all try to answer. Welcome and do not pause to ask here or on the ship. You can always send someone a private messege as well but I am betting most of your answers will be here. Looking forward to meeting you, TJ and kiddos (lots of them)

Once you have your reservation from R Famiy, you can use the red NCL reservation number printed on the reservation to log on to NCL and do a couple of things. You can fill out their registration form that needs to be completed prior to the cruise. You can also book your excursions.
I recommend the White Pass & Yukon train excursion if you want to see some amazing scenery - waterfalls, mountains, alpine plants, maybe a little snow in July, etc.
The lumberjack show in Ketchican was OK, if you've seen it on TV, you've seen it.
In Juneau, the Mt. Roberts tramway is right as you go into town. I thought that it was worth going up on the tram - great views, native interpretive center, good gift shop. I would not book that ahead of time since the chances of a late return are pretty minimal.
Check out the travel sites tl learn about the stops on the itenerary. I found some great galleries and craft shops to visit.
I do recommend buying travel insurance. My partner got really sick and we had to get off of last year's cruise mid-trip. The insurance company folks got us back home to MN and took care of the reservations and the cost.

To add to that you will recieve your Cruise doc's 3 to 4 weeks prior to the Cruise. The best way to meet people is 1.At the pre Cruise dinner.2.Poolside kick off party at 4 on 12. 3.` Mixers that are scheduled for people with same interest groups.
Here is the most important one.Go and introduce yourself. You will find that people are very friendly. These boards are a great way to meet poeple also.
WELCOME!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I will post more later.I am not even showered yet
PS when you get your docs it will have your cabin number on it.

Hi back,
That depends on the age of the child. There is the kids club for 3 to 12 years old.
They are open until 12 or 1 in the morning.
Then the teen Club is for 13 +.The teens ususlly hook up the first night and you dont see them until it is time to get off the boat.
They have a nanny service which you can sign up for in the morning it has specific hours where you can drop off the wee ones and go enjoy dinner or a show.
The staff is great with the kids.
We started going on the Cruise when my daughter was a 12 she met friends that we are very close to.I also have friends that have used the Nanny service and we very happy.
Hope that helps.

This has nothing to do with the daycare aspect...Our daughter is 13..lol
There are three things you will want to remember for your cruise...first timer or not...:
A multi outlet power bar...for charging little things..like extra rechargeable camera batteries and mp3 players!!...AND there is only one outlet in the cabin so a power bar will be the bomb!!!
A couple of battery powered night lites...we use the DOT-IT...I am hearing that there is no light switch at the head of the bed in the cabins...so lighting your way BACK to the bed is a good thing!!!
and last but not least!! a small travel backlit alarm clock or regular alarm...much easier to see in the dark then the little numbers on a watch!! We learned that one real quick!!!
You will have a great time on this wonderful boatful of rfamilies!!!

I am just wondering about one of the posts I read about the scooters. I have some mobility issues and was thinking about renting a scooter before the cruise.
Am I wasting my time and money? They charge about $500 for the week scooter rental.
How much walking is involved when you get off the ship for the excursions?
Can the scooters be brought with you on the excursions?
Can I navigate freely on the ship with the scooter & what about getting it up and down the ramps for the excursions?
Anyone who can help, I'd appreciate it.

I think the kids club is actually for ages 2-12- our son did it last year at age 2- I think the 2-5 age is called juniors maybe. There is also a nanny service (as Cheryl said above) for kids under 2, but it's usually only for the nighttime hours. NCL says that the kids club is open until 10:30pm, and it's usually only open (the free part) when you are no longer in port. They do have additional port-day "babysitting" (or at least they have on the past cruises) but that's at additional cost.

I know noting about scooters etc but a friend of mine just took her parents on a cruise and they rented a scooter for her dad to use and brought it with them. It died within a day, would not hold a charge and they still had to pay the entire rental fee. He was pretty much confined to the room for the majority of the cruise unless he chose to let them wheel him in a wheelchair. So, after hearing that I'd probably suggest seeing if NCL rents them as opposed to an independent rental.

Hi
I rented a scooter from the people NCL recommend and it was great they also will come and fix it or repair it if needed. It was the best thing I did. Also it will be in your room when you get there. This year I am getting it delivered to the hotel because the walk thru the pier and onto the ship is very long. If you want email me and I will send you more info.

In the Mexico cruise, they had pretty extensive child care (for 6 year olds): 9am-12pm, 2pm-5pm, 7pm-midnight. This was excellent. Anybody knows if they will have such extensive childcare on this cruise too?
