If you live in Florida Vote No on Amendment 2
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I received this from the Bulletin Board and Freecycle Boards where you sell or giveaway things...the moderators do a good job keeping us informed. I hadn't been aware this was on our November ballot...I guess I know what I'm doing this Saturday. Please, if you live in Florida, get the word out to vote NO on Amendment 2!!!

VOTE NO on AMENDMENT 2!
An amendment to our State constitution, slated to be on the
November ballot, states: "Inasmuch as marriage is the legal union
of only one man and one woman as husband and wife, no other legal union
that is treated as marriage or the substantial equivalent thereof shall
be valid or recognized."
State law already bans same sex marriage. Yet, it is deceptively
called "The Marriage Protection Amendment."
If passed, what would it mean to unmarried couples, including those
who are heterosexual, many of whom do not marry for financial reasons?
Domestic partners gay and straight could not decide for
themselves what rights to give each other.
They would lose their health insurance.
They could not accompany one another when obtaining medical
care.
They could not visit in the hospital or make end-of-life
decisions for loved ones.
They would have no rights of inheritance, even though they may
have worked together to obtain their assets.
It is feared that the ambiguity in the wording of the amendment may
lead to its passing, which requires 60% approval.
Don't be misled. Please vote NO on this amendment, and
urge your family and friends to defeat it!
In an effort to defeat Amendment 2 on the November ballot, the Social
Justice Committee of the Unitarian Universalist Fellowship of Charlotte
County is holding a demonstration on Saturday, September 20, 2008, from
10 to noon, at the corner of 41 South and Retta Esplanade West (the
sidewalk alongside the Best Western). Signs will be available, or bring
your own.
