Wisconsin Gay Neighbors are Putting Their Faces on Billboards to Emphasize Common Values of Love, Commitment, and Family.
Starting August 18, 2008, photographs of real families from the local gay community will show up on 30 billboards and bus shelters in Southeastern Wisconsin. Images of gay parents with toddlers and teens; gay singles and couples; gay senior citizens; and supporters of the gay community will illustrate Cream City Foundation’s Gay Neighbor Billboard Media Campaign. The billboard slogans (“Family. It’s all about LOVE!” and “Ask us about our families.”) will drive viewers to the campaign website “GayNeighbor.org”. The website answers basic questions about the gay community and issues they face. Visitors to the website are encouraged to get to know their gay neighbors. In addition to featuring the people on the billboards, the website will collect photographs and stories from the global community of lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender people, their family, friends, and allies.
“This is a public education campaign for Southeastern Wisconsin aimed at challenging stereotypes and creating allies,” says Cream City Foundation President, Tim Clark.
“Using local families was an important decision. We hope that the billboards will have more impact when people realize that these are not paid models, they are neighbors from Milwaukee and Waukesha Counties,” says Maria Cadenas, Executive Director of the Cream City Foundation.
“This is a fantastic opportunity to make connections with people who haven't thought about supporting us before,” says Ray, one Milwaukee neighbor on the billboards.
“It’s much harder to hate someone when you see how similar they are to you,” says Karen, who posed for the billboards with her partner Kristie, and their four children.. “I hope one day, no one’s children will have to put themselves on the line just to be considered a “regular” family.”
Another neighbor on the billboards states, “These billboards are an important way for our child to identify and appreciate the diversity that exists within her family structure. Both families of origin and families of choice can be happy and successful. This campaign gives us a way to emphasize our common values.”
Cream City Foundation serves as a catalyst for social change on behalf of Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender communities in southeastern Wisconsin. Their work includes strategic grant making, education, and media outreach. Find out more at www.creamcityfoundation.org.
