just thought i'd share a paper i wrote for my political science class i got a 44/46 on it :)
Gay Marriage and Adoption
My paper is based on two different articles relating to the same thing. The first article came from the New York Times, it is called Court Voids Ruling Backing Gay Marriage,
(www.nytimes.com/2005/12/09/nyregion/09gays.html). It is about how the lower courts in New York ruled on gay marriage. It goes on to explain that Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg is personally in favor of permitting same-sex marriage. It also explains a law suit that was filed on behalf of five same-sex couples in New York City.
The Second article came from the Washington Post, it is called Gay Marriages, Civil Unions Around World, (http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2005/12/05/AR2005120500178.html). It discusses countries on Europe that have taken action on legalizing gay marriage and adoption. They also talk about states in the U.S. that have taken steps to offer gays more rights and allow them to marry and adopt kids.
Gay marriage and adoption have always been controversial issues. There are different views on both topics. Some people think it should be legal and others don’t. There have even been talks about amending the Constitution so that it states that marriage is only between a man and a woman. The Constitution is one of our nation’s most important documents. The Constitution garuntees our rights as individuals, it states that everyone is created equal. Should we amend a document that says everyone has equal rights to exclude people that want to marry someone of the same sex? That would contradict the Constitution. It would say everyone has equal rights, but not these people. It wouldn’t make any sense at all.
Several years ago many people fought for their rights. Women fought for their rights. They wanted to be treated equally. They wanted to be able to vote, hold any job they wished, and do several other things that men could do. It may have taken them several years but they kept on fighting and they got their equal rights. African Americans also fought for their rights. They wanted to be released from slavery, when they were free they had to fight for equality. They wanted to be able to sit anywhere they wanted on the bus, drink out of any water fountain they wished, live anywhere they pleased, attend any school they wanted to, and many other things. After several years of fighting they got what they wanted. They were equals. Now, it is time for gay people to fight for their rights. It may take them several years, but eventually they will win and be able to get married and adopt as history repeats itself.
Some people say that marriage is only between a man and a woman, and any other type is unacceptable. Times are changing, things that weren’t accepted in the past are being accepted now. These people are all old fashioned, they need to realize that time has changed and accept it. Its just like people who say that a woman’s job is in the home and it is to cook, clean, and take care of the kids, or how about racist people who still insist that African Americans should be slaves. These beliefs are wrong because everyone is equal, including gay people.
Gay marriage will cost us more money is what some people say. I say, “So what?” It will cost everyone a few dollars more of there pay check for their health benefits. Gay people help pay for straight peoples health benefits now and they don’t complain about it, so why is that okay? That doesn’t make any sense. They are going to be married just like a straight couple, their partner should be able to get health benefits. It really shouldn’t bother anybody.
If we allow gays to get married and adopt children, it will corrupt them. I feel it won’t. I believe that if you are gay, you are born with it. It just takes different people different amounts of time to figure it out. It is almost like trial and error sometimes. Some people are heterosexually married for years before they finally realize that they are not happy and they never will be with their current partner. Others know right off the bat when they don’t feel any attraction towards the opposite sex at all. Being gay isn’t something that you develop over night. I feel that if parents are gay it won’t influence the children at all. It’s not like the kids are going to be in the bedroom with them. Most adopted kids are just happy to have a warm, loving home, weather they have two mothers, two fathers, or a mother and a father. With so many kids waiting to be adopted why not allow it? A homosexual couple can provide as much loving and care as a heterosexual couple. Take Rosie and Kelli O’Donnell for example. They are a famous gay couple with four kids, three adopted and one by artificial insemination. In every picture or video I have seen of those kids they are very happy. They are also loved, a lot. When Rosie had her show she always talked about her kids, even in her book she does. She always talks about how much she loves them.
I believe that being gay is inborn, because you don’t just wake up one day and say “I’m gay.” It takes time to realize it. If someone could choose to be gay or straight, why would they choose the harder lifestyle? I feel that being gay is harder than being straight because being gay is not fully accepted by our society right now. It will be a very long time before it will be.
Other countries have already taken steps to legalize gay marriage and adoption. The United States should too. The U.S. should follow suit with many other countries in the world. The U.S. is known for its equal rights and freedom for all people. The U.S. should be setting the example for all the other countries, not following what they do. The U. S. has always set the correct example why stop now.
To sum it all up, gay people should be able to get married and/or adopt children. It will make society better by getting it to be more accepting of people that are different from them. Several different groups have fought for their rights in the past, now it’s just another group’s turn to fight, as history repeats its course.
